CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Katie hummed as she poured the wine. “I’m happy you could finally stop by. I’ve missed you.”

Guilt washed over Tara. Ann had left town and Tara had moved back to her place nearly a month ago. Every free moment since, she’d spent with Jake. She wanted to tell Katie but she and Jake had agreed to keep things just between them.

“I’m sorry, I’ve just been so busy with the show.”

“You know I really enjoyed when you stayed here. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad Ann left the country. But it was fun having you close.” Katie handed her a glass of wine and then sat on the couch, facing her.

She took a sip. “It was fun but I did miss my place.”

“And your privacy.” A large grin spread on her friend’s face. “Has Jake been staying at your place every night?”

She spit out her wine. “What?”

Katie laughed. “Oh come on. You really thought that Ryan and I didn’t know?”

“Jake told you?” They’d done a great job of hiding from any photographers, and she’d thought they had hid their relationship from Ryan and Katie too. Maybe they weren’t as subtle as she’d thought.

Since they’d gotten back from the cabin, they’d shared a bed every night together, falling asleep in each other’s arms. It probably wasn’t rocket science for Katie to notice.

“No one told us. We have eyes. You two did spend a week in the same condo as us. Not to mention, since you moved out, Jake has only been to the condo long enough to shower.”

Just the mention of a shower had her mind going back to the great one she’d had with him this morning.

“You are glowing. I’m so happy for you two.”

“Thank you. When I met him, I couldn’t stand him, but then I really got to know him at the cabin. Since we got back, it has been blissful.”

“Blissful?”

Tara laughed. “I know that sounds cheesy, but it’s true.”

Katie’s smile fell. “I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but there’s something you should know.” She pulled out her phone and opened the screen, turning it so they both could view it.

On her screen was a photo of Jake kissing her and a large headline: Oops, She Did It Again!

Quickly scanning the article, all her fears were confirmed.

“Oh no. This is why we didn’t tell anyone. How did they get that photo?” She scanned it, trying to make out any detail. It had been blown up to show their faces, so the background was blurry.

“It looks like it was outside your building.”

She groaned. “Last night I met him at the door instead of buzzing him up. What an idiot!”

Her friend’s arm snaked around her shoulders. “You’re not an idiot. These photographers are. Who stalks people just to make up lies?”

A laugh escaped her. “People willing to take a photo to make some easy money.” She took a gulp of her wine. “Wait, did you really know I was seeing Jake?”

A slow grin formed on her friend’s face.
